The 1990's fitted cupboards did not fit with our design ideas for the master bedroom. Last week was spent removing them, with a slight pang of guilt about waste.
I thought the Estate Agent brochure had a picture of the room, but I was mistaken. In future I will double check to make sure I have a full set of 'before' pictures. The picture of one wall, which I took last week, provides a flavour of the room.
Directly below the mirror, in the picture above, 'Richard Tunstall' left his moniker in 1996 adjacent to the wall.
Strangely, in the best 'it's a small world' fashion, the following week our architect visited. He spotted the signature and said he was meeting a 'Richard Tunstall' in the pub that evening. Sure enough he was 'Richard Tunstall 1996'. He vaguely remembered doing some work at the house when he was working for his father 27 years ago.
We had similar 'luck' last year when decorating a bedroom in our current 250+ year old house. Above the door, while scrapping off several layers of wallpaper, we found Jack Williamson's message "August 14th 1915, War, Paperhanger". Sue put a post on the Local Facebook History Group page. Within an hour someone provided the email address of Jack's great granddaughter. 30 minutes later Rachel contacted Sue to thank her for telling her about the discovery.
We framed the pencil writing on the wall and added the oldest piece of wallpaper we could find from the bits we had scrapped off. Hopefully it will remain in the house as a small part of the history of our current home.
