After cutting down trees it was necessary to dispose of the branches and get rid of the tree trunks. Two wonderful tracked toys were hired to complete the jobs.
Branches were piled up next to where trees were felled. The first toy was a chipper that chewed and then spewed branches of about six inches (150mm) in sizes. Stupidly, to make everything ‘tidy’, I suggested we put the chippings in one ton builders bags (1m x 1m x 1m) in a far flung corner of the garden.
After about 30 wheelbarrow trips, two hours later, I realised this was hard work and stupid. Instead, thereafter, we sprayed the wood chippings on to parts of the garden that could do with some mulch.
We created more wood chippings with a stump grinder. The cutting wheel on these rotates and the user controls the position of the wheel to slowly grind down the stump.
There was small accident while refueling one of the toys. Luckily no one was hurt. I have learnt that pouring water on a pool of petrol underneath wood chippings only spreads the fire. It does not put it out.
