Chris, a fully authenticated Canadian lumberjack, has been helping at the hovel while visiting the UK. Planning permission allowed the felling of some red cedar and silver birch trees that might have endangered the hovel or those building it. Elder trees will be planted elsewhere at the hovel to compensate for the removal of trees.
It’s always good to watch an expert at work. Every tree fell exactly in the desired direction. Chris also had unerring accuracy in knowing how far the top of the tree would land, from where he was cutting it, by using a stick as long as his arm held at right angles in his hand. Having seen the accuracy of this measurement system I slowly gained confidence to stand closer to the tree as I pulled on a rope to further guide the tree in the right direction.
The removed trees allow an awful lot more light into the garden, as the before and after picture below shows.
Lumberjacking has also produced about 12 tons of cut wood that is now drying out in the garden ready for a log burning stove . . . one day.
